APacCHRIE Conference: Creating Tourism Sustainably in Challenging Times

APacCHRIE is a leading and notable association for hospitality and tourism educators and educational institutions. Not only does APacCHRIE enable a network of educators and institutions to collaborate, but it also advances quality education, research, and professional practice.

APacCHRIE holds annual conferences at different geographical locations within the Asia-Pacific region. In 2020, the School of Hospitality and Service Management (SHSM) won the bid to host the APacCHRIE 2022. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the APacCHRIE 2022 had to be held in virtual mode, hosted at Sunway University.

APacCHRIEconferences bring together academics, researchers, industry practitioners, postgraduate students, and undergraduate students to discuss and share their latest research and projects for the furtherance of the hospitality and tourism industry. This is particularly apt as the insightful discussions add to the body of knowledge and strengthen the resilience of the industry in the post-COVID-19 era. The topics discussed and the sessions covered include various aspects that impact tourism and hospitality including crisis management and recovery strategies, ethics and leadership, digital advancements in hospitality and tourism, culinary arts and gastronomic experiences, and sustainable development in tourism.

APacCHRIE 2022 was attended by close to 300 registrants from across the world including Australia, China, Fiji, France, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Oman, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam, and the United States.

Notable speakers from the fields of hospitality, tourism, and sustainability were also invited to speak at both the main and youth conferences including Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Professor Stephen Pratt, Professor Yuhanis Abdul Aziz, Professor Susanne Becken, Associate Professor T.C. Chang, Professor Catheryn Khoo, Professor Kaye Chon, and Associate Professor Daniel Chong. There was also an industry panel session which was attended by Mr. Christopher Cocker (Fiji), Mr. CS Lim (Malaysia), and Ms. Karina Lance (UAE), where invaluable industry insights were shared in preparation for borders reopening to boost the tourism sector.

Besides the sharing by industry and academic experts, there were also:

  • the youth conference
  • the editors' meeting
  • Sunway City sustainable leisure and hospitality tour
  • poster presentations
  • market study workshops
  • hotel industry updates
