Balloons, guests, musical performances and more! The School of Hospitality and Service Management at Sunway University recently held an event celebrating its silver jubilee. Alums, industry partners, students, and staff members were all in attendance, eager to commemorate the milestone. Planning and organisation were done by a team of dedicated BSc (Hons) Conventions and Events Management students, overseen by Ms Hairani M Nur, the Principal Teaching Fellow and Associate Programme Leader for Events.

In celebration of this jubilee, one should take the time to look back at The School of Hospitality and Service Management’s remarkable journey:

•    1998: The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (SHTM) was formed at Sunway College
•    2004: The School changed its name to the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management (SHTLM) as the programmes offered expanded. SHTLM was then under the administration of Sunway University College
•    2011: The School was transformed into a faculty structure called the Centre for Tourism, Hospitality & Culinary Management (CTHCM) under Sunway University Business School at Sunway University
•    2017: The School of Hospitality (SOH) was established as a separate School at Sunway University
•    2021: The School’s name was updated and is now known as the School of Hospitality and Service Management (SHSM). The programme syllabus was also extended to include service-sector-related subjects

It would not have been a celebration without some performances and entertainment. Muhd Ferhad Iskandar, a former Diploma in Events Management student, enchanted the audience with his guitar and vocal skills. At the same time, Dr Elangkovan Narayanan, Senior Lecturer, showcased his talent on the Mridangam, an ancient Indian percussion instrument. Their performances truly captured the joy of the occasion and served as a fitting representation of the multi-talented individuals from the School.

The event was attended and officiated by distinguished guests, including Professor Sibrand Poppema, President of Sunway University, Professor Marcus Stephenson, Dean of the School of Hospitality and Service Management, Associate Professor Dr Gan Joo Ee, Associate Dean for Education, Associate Professor Dr Alexander Trupp, Associate Dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies, and Ms Rita Lo, Associate Dean for Employability and Engagement.

The hosting of the anniversary celebration serves as a marker of the quality of the students in the School. Ms Hairani mentioned, “I am very proud of the student's performance, from the event’s ideation stage to making it a reality. I look forward to their significant impact on the events industry.”

As the School of Hospitality and Service Management continues its journey of excellence, it remains committed to nurturing talent and driving innovation in the dynamic hospitality and service sector. With such a rich talent pool of students and staff, another 25 years of success is just around the corner.
