Wong Shi Qi: Striving to Be the Best Version of Myself

Wong Shi Qi: Striving to Be the Best Version of Myself

How has the programme equipped students for employment?

Sunway University prepares students for the workforce by providing a well-rounded education. As one of Malaysia's leading private universities, Sunway is dedicated to cultivating students who are well-educated in their major and have a broad range of knowledge and experience. For example, the Global Supply Chain Management programme provides many subjects that give students a competitive advantage in the job market. This includes human resources, logistics, digital economy, marketing, and supply chain management theories. Such an arrangement allows students to build a strong foundation in supply chain management while also exploring a holistic view of the business. This has helped me build a solid knowledge base to face the future of work.

How has the programme equipped students to contribute to society?

The programme emphasises the business perspective and encourages students to impact society positively. The programme includes Business Ethics & Social Responsibilities and Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) courses. The GSCM course inspires students to consider environmental issues in the supply chain world, and assignments and exams incorporate the principle of 4R1D - reduce, reuse, recycle, reclaim, and degradable. Additionally, students are encouraged to actively participate in United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals events held around the campus. These resources help shape students into enthusiastic individuals about contributing to society.

If any academic/management staff has impacted students in any significant way:

During my university days, two individuals made a significant impact on me. First, Mr David Chong Boon Hean, the Associate Dean of Employability and Engagement Sunway Business School was the former club advisor of Sunway University Global Supply Chain, where I served as one of the former club executive committees. He offered me many opportunities to organise events and engage with significant stakeholders in the industry. I was honoured to host "The Future of Logistics Forum" with industry leaders such as the Managing Director of Maersk Malaysia and the Head of the Maritime Institute of Malaysia to share their thoughts and experiences in the field with more than 200 students online. Ms Stella Ong Kim Yoke, the Programme Leader of Global Supply Chain Management, was my pillar of strength during my university days, encouraging me to strive to be the best version of myself. She always provided the best support to us in many ways we needed, even after we graduated.

What skills were acquired from the programme of study that benefitted them (e.g. Entrepreneurial skills, teamwork, etc.):

This programme has given me the soft skills necessary to excel in the workplace. We were frequently assigned to work in groups, which enhanced my collaboration skills. Although it can be challenging to work in a team, it provides an excellent opportunity to discover innovative ideas and share various experiences and thoughts. I viewed each group assignment as an enriching experience, which helped me cultivate a more efficient team environment. Furthermore, I have developed time management skills through my time at university. Despite having a packed schedule, I learned to balance assignments, social activities, and my time effectively.

Campus experience – holistic student experience:

Sunway University is truly a dream place to be! The university boasts a beautiful learning environment with dedicated lecturers and is the most happening campus ever. Students can explore their strengths and passions through various clubs and societies. After long study hours, I enjoyed participating in various club events and volunteering opportunities, such as the Sunway University Global Supply Chain and Sunway Student Volunteers Club. I have always wanted to study in a place that offers personal, social, and professional benefits, and Sunway University exceeded my expectations. It also encourages students to build connections, making them more versatile. Overall, my university days were enjoyable and helped shape me into who I am today.
