The BSc (Hons) International Hospitality Management programme at Sunway University has prepared Sheine Mahendran to understand and comprehend the theoretical and practical aspects of the hospitality industry. The fun classes and the practical sessions opened his eyes to the reality of the hospitality industry, which in turn helped him progress and pursue a career in the hospitality industry. Sheine fondly remembers the practical Food and Beverage lessons, which helped him understand guests’ requirements and service expectations in the hospitality industry.

Throughout the programme, Sunway University allowed Sheine and his coursemates to participate in community activities and understand the importance of giving back to the community through diverse initiatives. According to Sheine, these values have stayed with him until today, and he believes they have helped him to improve himself and respect others.

A significant influence on Sheine came from dedicated staff members in the School of Hospitality and Service Management. Their guidance made him realise the world of available opportunities and how he could work to achieve his goals. Sheine’s career path was a conscious choice to pursue his passion. Despite coming from a family background in Finance and Accounts, he discovered his true calling in the hospitality and service industry.

Some of the fundamental values and skills Sheine has carried with him throughout his career are teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. According to him, these three in particular paved his pathway.

Sunway University provided Sheine with academic enrichment and a warm and welcoming environment. Being an international student, it was his first time away from home, and he claimed he did not know what to expect. Nevertheless, he fondly recalls his warm welcome upon arrival and the friendliness of the staff and colleagues. Sheine notes that the School, especially, was beneficial and welcoming in all aspects.

When quizzed on his hobbies, Sheine revealed a passion for sports, particularly basketball and cricket. On more relaxed days, he spends his time binge-watching TV shows.

The bonds I forged with his coursemates remain strong, and they continually reconnect to share life's experiences. Sheine plans to visit Malaysia soon to revisit the university and reunite with colleagues.

“My Sunway journey started with accepting the reality of sitting at the orientation, waiting eagerly to see what would come. I can guarantee it was nothing short of amazing, and I would love to relive that moment again.”

Sheine has worked for several different companies in the hospitality industry. These include the Weligama Bay Marriott Resort & Spa and the Sheraton Oman Hotel. He has held roles within these companies as a Sales and Marketing Executive and a Groups and Events Sales Manager. He is currently employed as a Groups Catering and Events Manager by the InterContinental Ras Al Khaimah Resort & Spa. Looking at his career history, it is apparent that Sheine has worked for several high-profile companies and achieved success.

One of the most significant career achievements Sheine has had so far was receiving a double promotion from a Sales Executive to a Sales Manager within a year and a half. This accomplishment serves as a testament to his dedication and hard work and represents a proud milestone Sheine will always cherish.

In sum, Sheine sees Sunway University as a guiding light in his hospitality journey, providing him with the knowledge, skills, and values that continue to shape his personal and professional life. Sheine’s guiding life principle and motto is simple yet powerful: "Be honest".
