Sarah Mungly: BSc (Hons) Medical Biotechnology Alumna Is a Book Author!

A recent graduate of the BSc (Hons) in Medical Biotechnology program, Sarah Mungly is, not surprisingly, the author of three books. Her books have received starred reviews on various platforms and are available online on multiple apps. During her undergraduate days at Sunway University, she published her first series, which focused on the personal growth journey of a girl. Her first book's success and positive reception inspired her to continue writing and explore her writing skills. By the end of her final year, she was inspired to write her third book, which was based on the life of a girl with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) from the perspective of someone dealing with neurodivergence. Sarah is working on her fourth book, which she plans to publish in 2023. Currently, Sarah is enrolled in the MSc in Life Sciences program at SMLS, focusing on cancer cell biology. Her primary research interest is identifying and targeting specific epigenetic patterns in breast cancer. She will analyze large publicly-available epigenome-wide datasets to identify regions of the human genome frequently altered in breast cancers. Using epigenetic editing tools, she aims to reverse these epigenetic marks in vitro cell line models to determine their impact on cancer cell behavior and chromatin structure. This work will lead to a better understanding of the impact of chromatin structure on cancer cell development and the potential identification of novel targets for breast cancer treatment. Her supervisor is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Felicia Chung Fei Lei, whose research is focused on cancer epigenetics, urothelial cancer genetics, and cancer immune evasion mechanisms. Sarah describes Dr. Felicia as a "very motivating, friendly, and helpful" supervisor who inspires and motivates those around her.

After completing her Final Year Project, Sarah knew she wanted to continue her career in Molecular Biology and do more cancer research. Upon graduation, she joined the Molecular department of C-lab, a diagnostic lab in her home country, where she was introduced to various molecular techniques. She was particularly fascinated by Next Generation Sequencing. She was highly inspired and encouraged by the technical head of the lab, Dr. Anusha Devi Nawoor, to pursue her dreams and further her master's. As she learned more about the different techniques and tests, she developed an increasing interest in cancer research, leading her to pursue her master's in the field.
