Nur Hazwani Aminuddin: Embracing Student Life and Kickstarting a Career in the Actuarial Industry

Nur Hazwani Binti Aminuddin, commonly known as Wani by her lecturers and coursemates, is a Sunway University alumna currently working at Great Eastern Takaful Berhad as an Associate in the Actuarial Valuation department. Being awarded a scholarship from Yayasan Peneraju Pendidikan Bumiputera, Wani was able to further her studies in Foundation of Arts at Sunway College. She then continued her studies in BSc (Hons) in Actuarial Studies at Sunway University.

Asked about the one moment that was the true start of her Sunway journey, she mentioned that on her first day entering the auditorium for orientation, she saw students studying at the Sunway Foyer and that was when she realized that this place was going to be her home for the next four years of her life.

She also constantly reminded herself that she needed to excel in her studies. Initially feeling that she could not survive and perform well in her studies, she was delighted to then find out that the lecturers and coursemates were very approachable and helpful. She expressed that Sunway University will always have a special place in her heart recalling the times when she stayed up late with her friends to meet the assignments’ deadlines and studied hard for quizzes and final exams at the Sunway Foyer.

Wani still keeps in touch with her coursemates, saying that she would not have been able to survive her varsity days without her closest friends.

Wani was also an active member of Sunway Student Volunteers (SSV). S doing volunteering activities during weekends with her friends. Apart from that, she was also the secretary of the Sahabat Society where she got to meet new friends, learn to write reports, and organize events.

Despite being fond of calculation subjects since primary school, she never imagined that she will eventually land a job in the actuarial industry. She gives this credit to Sunway University, stating that Sunway has equipped her with the knowledge that she needs as an Actuarial Associate, from fundamental learning to advanced computer skills, such as Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic for Application (VBA).

“Having a lot of assignments and presentations has made me less nervous to present my findings or workings in front of my superiors,” said Wani. However, she only started to set her goal to venture into the Actuarial Valuation department after she was exposed to valuation-related tasks during her internship in Actuarial Partners Consulting Sdn Bhd. Due to this, she remains grateful that she can be a part of the valuation team at Great Eastern Takaful Berhad.

Commenting on her increasing workload, Wani said that Sunway has helped her to cope with those challenging moments with the experiences of working under pressure as a student.

Wani thinks that young people nowadays should develop good computer and programming skills as they are very helpful in assisting them to complete tasks within a short period. She also reminds the next generation of Sunwayians to enjoy their time with friends and lecturers while they are still studying in Sunway because she said that they are going to miss everything about Sunway when they step into working life.
