Fatima Gachi Ahmed: An Analysis of Analyst

Fatima Gachi Ahmed

Fatima Gachi Ahmed is a graduate of Sunway University’s BSc Information Systems (Business Analytics). Having graduated in 2020, she currently works as a data analyst at the Central Bank of Nigeria. While her current position is related to financial technology, she has also worked in jobs related to logistics and regulation. Fatima credits her success to her time at Sunway University, which she claims gave her “character-building experiences that taught me to be self-aware, self-knowledgeable, and to create boundaries with myself and my environment.”

But how exactly did Fatima’s experience at Sunway University give her a foothold in the working world? Fatima believes that the foundational knowledge taught in Sunway University’s programmes gave her a solid base to build on. “Analytical and problem-solving skills have been instilled in me and given me the drive to grow in my career with ever-developing technology”. These skills have proven to be highly beneficial in achieving her current position.

Many aspiring computing graduates may be curious as to what data analysts do on a day-to-day basis. Fatima says, “My job is to acquire, analyse, and preserve data to help customers make better decisions.” While this sounds simple, it is a huge responsibility. “As a financial data analyst, I am responsible for compiling information on financial instruments that act as important information gateways for the company. My duty as a financial data analyst is to support transmitting essential knowledge to those most need it.” This may sound daunting, but Fatima’s time at Sunway University has prepared her for such responsibilities.

By taking on this responsibility, Fatima has allowed herself to impact the world of financial technology. “My present position assists the organisation in risk management, cost-effectiveness, developing chances for focused cross- and up-selling to existing clients, strategy formulation, and real-time tracking of KPIs that directly and indirectly affect the Nigerian economy.” Sunway University aims to produce graduates that impact their respective fields, and Fatima is a shining example of this.

Despite all her success, it would be untrue to say that Fatima has never faced struggles in her journey. “Time management, social and interpersonal connections, and balancing work and life have been major issues for me, from university to the present.” Fatima continues to deal with these challenges but believes she is gradually overcoming them. She claims that the skills she gained at Sunway University and her working experience have allowed her to manage these issues better.

Fatima keeps herself motivated to push through challenges, stating, “Growth has been my driving force in staying in this field”. She is determined to use her skills to grow and advance technology to benefit the daily lives of humanity. “The future of tech is limitless, and I am looking forward to simpler and more productive ways of life.”

Fatima fondly referred to Dr Angela Lee, Head of the Department of Computing and Information Systems at Sunway University, when asked if she owes her success to any mentors. “She has been an all-around mentor for me; she provided me with career advice when I was unsure, and as a direct result of her, I am where I am now.

The impact Sunway University's outstanding individuals can have on a student’s future. Besides conducting programmes and teaching classes, they provide students with the guidance they need regarding career options. Fatima’s story is truly one that all students of Sunway University can look to for inspiration.
