Chin Siew Mei: The Actuarial Science Valedictorian

In the realm of mathematics, the allure of constants is undeniable. But in the grand tapestry of life, true appeal lies in the realisation that change is the only constant.

Minute instances and monumental events have shaped Chin Siew Mei's journey through life. Among these transformative moments, one can look back to an inconspicuous school visit in 2018 that ignited her desire to pursue higher education at Sunway University. This was followed by another pivotal juncture that emerged when the world was engulfed by an unprecedented global pandemic, setting in motion an odyssey of self-discovery, growth, and gratitude.

Emerging fresh from her completion of the Foundation in Arts programme at Sunway College, she was excited about her foray into Actuarial Studies in March 2020. However, the pandemic shattered these initial expectations. And yet, it paradoxically opened many doors. Navigating the challenges of online learning became a towering endeavour. Nevertheless, it refined her self-motivation, time management, and resilience. The School of Mathematical Sciences responded to the pandemic by innovating an all-encompassing educational paradigm and fostering diverse evaluation methods, including research, collaborative group projects, and intricate real-world problem-solving. Amidst this tumult, she found solace in the unwavering commitment of her lecturers.

The nexus of external support and her own tenacious endeavour yielded exceptional academic triumphs. She secured six coveted exemptions from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), and her prowess earned her the prestigious Sir Edward Johnston Prize from IFoA, a testament to her distinction as the foremost graduate of her cohort. With First Class Honours adorning her achievements, she also garnered the Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award 2023, further embellishing her academic laurels.

Beyond the academic sphere, her convictions extended to a strong belief in the significance of transcending academic confines. Engaging in various competitions, including business case studies and hackathons, she stood triumphant as part of the winning ensemble at the Carsome Innovation Data Hackathon 2022.

This belief extends to her involvement in a plethora of leadership roles within clubs and societies, including Sunway Actuarial and Financial Excellence (SAFE), the Malaysian Actuarial Student Association (MASA), and Sunway Student Ambassadors (SSA). Notable among these was her active role within Sunway Student Volunteers (SSV), where her commitment as a member, committee member, and eventual President allowed her to unearth the joys of benevolence and community contribution. Through these endeavours, she metamorphosed into a person endowed with increased discernment, outspokenness, and empathy.

Her journey culminated in the honour of being named valedictorian in July 2023. However, she firmly believes that the true benefit lies in the connections she forged with the individuals from Sunway University, each leaving an indelible imprint on her heart and mind. As her life's voyage embraces inevitable change, one thing remains constant: the teachings and memories perpetually etched in her being.
