Tan See Yin: Accounting Is Not Just About Calculation

Tan See Yin: Accounting Is Not Just About Calculation

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Accounting and Finance (BAF) is one of the programmes Sunway Business School offers. Based on the Student Barometer 2022, Sunway University achieved higher satisfaction rates than the Malaysian and Global average satisfaction scores in all Employment Support categories. This outstanding support enhances the competitive advantage of Sunway graduates, equipping them to excel among their peers.

Thanks to the knowledge Tan See Yin gained from completing the Accounting and Finance programme, she will be exempted from 9 papers as she takes the next step in her academic journey: completing her ACCA professional papers. See Yin explained that the programme starts with a basic level of accounting and gradually progresses to an advanced level, offering detailed accounting knowledge. “It emphasises that accounting goes beyond simple debit and credit concepts, encompassing accounting standards, principles, framework, and taxation, each interconnected and playing a crucial role.”

Besides the comprehensive structure of the programme, See Yin also said that she benefited from the lecturers. “The lecturers of the programmes play a significant role in assisting students with their studies, imparting essential knowledge, and sharing real-life working experiences through practical examples to ensure a thorough understanding of the theory.”

See Yin also mentioned that Sunway Business School organises various seminars and workshops, inviting industry experts and alumni to develop students professionally. Such events provide alumni with valuable networking opportunities and connections, especially for students pursuing specific career paths.

See Yin feels that all institutions are responsible for ensuring their accounting graduates are well-trained. “Students with an accounting and finance background are responsible to society as they enable shareholders and the public to make informed decisions, comprehend resource allocation, and assess business management through the information they provide.”

“Teamwork has been the most crucial skill I've learned during my BAF programme, primarily because most assignments are based on teamwork. Collaborating effectively with team members is essential to meet assignment requirements and adhere to deadlines.” She also mentioned that time management is an essential skill for students, as balancing time for assignments and revision is crucial to ensure both are handled effectively.

When asked about her campus experience, See Yin described it as holistic. “Students in BAF possess extensive knowledge in finance, accounting, auditing, marketing, and management, allowing them to explore their interests and gain practical experience through internships. Despite being short-term, my internship taught me invaluable lessons from managers and seniors that are not easily attainable from textbooks.”

As she prepares to take the next step in her journey as an accountant, See Yin looks back fondly on her time at Sunway University. “I thank Sunway University, Sunway Business School and all the lecturers for this enriching experience. My time at Sunway University will undoubtedly be one of the most cherished memories in my life.”
