Sunway Student Volunteers: Gardener for a Day

In collaboration with local NGO – Free Tree Society KL, the University provided free educational opportunities for students and the community about good water management in relation to gardening and plant life management. Participants were educated on water conscious usage and good practices of water management. In 2022, one specific focus was the use of rainwater harvesting systems to re-use water and reduce the pressure on treated water from main supplies.

Why is rainwater harvesting important?
Rainwater harvesting is a method of collecting and reusing free rainwater that falls on our residential or commercial property. It is regarded as an environmental solution for us to reduce our reliance on imported water or water from catchment areas.
However, did you know that the volume of treated water reserve margin for six Malaysian states was recorded at an alarming level of less than 15%? This will lead to a scarcity of water in the future, especially as the population  and economic activity grow. Thus, widespread implementation of rainwater harvesting within a municipality's service area can reduce this generation's long-term water needs.
