Overview

Sunway Biological Sciences laboratories are located on Level 3 and Level 4 of the Sunway University New Building. There are 3 teaching laboratories (Biology Lab 2, 3 and 4), Cell Culture Room, Biology Laboratory Research 1, Student-Project Laboratory, Molecular Medicine Lab, Biology Laboratory Research 2 and Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) Lab Facility.

*New* Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) Lab Facility
Location: Level 3

This facility was established in early year of 2020 for specialized research work that involves agents that may pose moderate hazards to personnel and the environment. This lab facility is different from other laboratories in that (1) laboratory personnel require specific training in handling pathogenic agents and are supervised by researchers competent in handling infectious agents and associated procedures; (2) access to the laboratory is restricted; and (3) all procedures in which infectious aerosols or splashes may be created are conducted in Biosafety Cabinets (BSCs) or other physical containment equipment.

Image

UV-Vis-NIR Spectrophotometer

Function: It measures a material's reflection or transmission by measuring light intensity/absorbency at a specific wavelength and useful in the determining the optical properties (transmittance, reflectance and absorbance) of liquids and solids.

Image

Photoluminescence Spectrophotometer

Function: It measures routine fluorescence measurements in a quality-control environment. It is useful in the characterisation of the optical and electronic properties of semiconductors and molecules.

Image

Optical Polarising Microscope

Function: It is used to capture the magnified image of an object through different contrast-enhancing techniques. It is useful in detecting phase changes in samples; observe and photograph specimens that are visible primarily due to their optically anisotropic character.

Image

FT-IR Spectrometer

Function: it detects the frequencies of infrared light which are absorbed by a molecule and is useful in the determination of the functional groups of molecules, relevant to both organic and inorganic chemistry.

Molecular Medicine Lab
Location: Level 4

Specialized equipment is located in this lab that are used for teaching and research purposes.

NanoString nCounter SPRINT™ Profiler

The nCounter SPRINT Profiler is a single instrument designed to let you digitally examine multiple pathways in a single tube and with an extraction-free workflow requiring only 10 minutes of hands-on time. Go from sample to answer in <24 hours even with difficult sample types, including FFPE tissue.

Image

Real-Time PCR Machine

It is a technique used to monitor the progress of a PCR reaction in real-time. At the same time, a relatively small amount of PCR product (DNA, cDNA or RNA) can be quantified.

Image

Rotary Microtome

A microtome is used to make thin slices of tissue (usually 4 μm but can be 2–10 μm). The cut tissue is floated over a water bath (Picture D), in order to eliminate wrinkles and distortion in the tissue, and picked up on a slide.

Image

Histological Section Water Bath

A warm water bath allows tissue to relax and smooth out prior to being mounted on a glass slide. The warmth also makes the paraffin stick to the glass slides.

*New* Biology Research Laboratory 2
Location: Level 3

The expansion of research infrastructure is a testament of Sunway University to be a World Class University. Biology Research Laboratory 2 is located on Level 3, equipped with various research equipment for students to carry out research and practical learning.

Plant Growth Chamber

Plant growth chambers produce controlled environments, which are crucial in making reproducible observations in experimental plant biology research.

Microplate Reader

A microplate reader is a laboratory instrument that is used to measure chemical, biological or physical reactions, properties, and analytes within the well of a microplate.

Biology Research Laboratory 1
Location: Level 4

Most of the biological science undergraduate and postgraduate students conduct their research in Biology Research Laboratory 1. This laboratory is equipped with various instruments that allow students to carry out various experiments (molecular biology, microbiology). Some of the equipment are; (A) Flow cytometry; (B) PCR; (C) ample of lab benches; (D) Percival incubator; (E) Microplate reader.

Image

Single Crystal X-ray Diffractometer

Function: It collects X-ray diffraction data nd provides detailed information about the crystallographic structure, chemical composition, and physical properties of materials

Image

NMR Spectrometer

Function: It allows a molecular structure of a material to be analysed by observing and measuring the interaction of nuclear spins when placed in a powerful magnetic field. The analysis result can provide a detailed information about the structure, dynamics, reaction state, and chemical environment of molecules.yea

Freeze Dryer

The purpose of freeze-drying is to remove a solvent (usually water) from dissolved or dispersed solids.

Image

Gas Absorption Analyser

Function: It measures surface area, pore size, and pore volume of powders and particulate materials.

Biology Lab 2, 3 and 4
Location: Level 4

These are teaching laboratories for our undergraduate students pursuing BSc (Hons) Biomedicine, BSc (Hons) Medical Biotechnology and BSc (Hons) Biology with Psychology.
