About The Programme

Sunway University’s Master of Science in Applied Mathematics is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the application of mathematics, statistics, and computational methods to intelligently model and describe the behaviour of real world’s complex systems that are frequently encountered in diverse field, such as manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare & medicine, advanced technology, logistics and supply chain, operations research, data science, risk management, education, natural sciences, biomedical sciences, engineering, finance, and the social sciences.

This taught master degree aims to equip students with the latest knowledge in optimization, optimal control, machine learning, mathematical modelling, simulation and mathematical and statistical techniques which are important tools in solving sophisticated problems constantly faced by businesses, industries, companies and governments, due to the ever-evolving and volatile environment.

Modules included in this programme must therefore be the most relevant in trying to address the on-going development and potential future impact of unpredictable global events; and they include unconstrained and constrained optimization, optimal control, discrete and combinatorial optimization, network design and analysis, mathematical modelling, computational and numerical methods, statistics and applied probability, control and systems theory and operations research. By embracing new mathematical methods and techniques, students who complete this programme shall develop and gain worthy transferable skillset and this will open up abundant opportunities for a fulfilling and lucrative career as an applied mathematician in the many industries mentioned above.

Uniqueness of the Programme

Mathematics is an important language for invention, innovation and ideas creation. Applied mathematicians play a crucial role in many on-going dedicated efforts by individuals, organisations, businesses, and governments in tackling issues that affect the livelihood of large portions of humanity, in mitigating potential future threats to planetary health, and in protecting our earth to ensure our species’ continued existence.

Sunway University’s MSc in Applied Mathematics programme equipped its graduates with an innovative mindset to apply mathematical tools and knowledge to create ideas, improve existing methodology, and invent new methods to provide practical solutions to a wide spectrum of problems arising from the physical and medical sciences, engineering, technology, finance and investment, business, commerce and social sciences.

The School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS) has experienced Professors, Associate Professors, and Senior Lecturers to deliver all the modules, and a supportive team to assist students in their study. Having a professor being a World Top 2% Scientist, a highly respected and prominent figure in applied mathematics, with a strong network with researchers from various parts of the world, particularly ASEAN and China. This professor has an excellent track record in optimization and optimal control, leading the team in the teaching and delivery of the modules, graduates from our MSc in Applied Mathematics will have a competitive advantage over those completing similar programmes from many other universities. The knowledge of all aspects of applied mathematics in general, will continue to grow in all directions, where new algorithmic and theoretical techniques will continually be developed and diffused into other disciplines at a rapid pace and optimization and control theory in particular, has therefore become even more profound.

SMS has a variety of activities such as seminar, research talk series, training and others to equip students with soft skills and up-to-date information on the development of the applied mathematics field. Students also get to enjoy facilities such as computer labs, library, sports centre, lecture theatre, study hub and etc, thriving in a conducive and vibrant environment through various clubs and societies during their study at Sunway University.

Entry Requirement

Bachelor’s Degree

  1. A bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields in mathematics, applied mathematics, engineering, computing, or actuarial science with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 out of 4.00 or equivalent, as accepted by the HEP Senate; or
  2. A bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields in mathematics, applied mathematics, engineering, computing, or actuarial science with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 and not meeting a CGPA of 2.50, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment.
  3. Candidates without a qualification in the related fields or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses as determined by the institution and meet the minimum CGPA based on (I) and (ii).
  4. Any other qualifications will be considered on a case-to-case basis
