The Global Culture Café - Featuring Cambodia

Sunway Cultural Exchange hosted The Global Culture Café starring Cambodia back in February. Led by Sunway’s very own Cambodian students - Julia Sam and Asnavy Sary - our speakers covered almost every aspect imaginable to enlighten us on Cambodian culture, from Royal history to street food to Angelina Jolie.

The event began at 8pm where we started things off with a brief sharing from Ms Joey, cultural exchange coordinator about the Sunway Cultural Exchange programme, and the hosts then conducted a short quiz to gauge the audience’s understanding of Cambodia prior to the speakers’ sharing. The floor was then passed to our speakers to briefly introduce themselves before proceeding with their presentation.

The presentation began with a captivating history lesson on Cambodian royalty by our host Julia Sam, before moving on to a quick language class where Asnavy Sary taught us a few common Cambodian phrases and slang. We were then introduced to an array of mouth-watering Cambodian delicacies that unfortunately is quite difficult to find in Malaysia! We also learned of the beautiful spots in Cambodia that are a must to visit, as well as some bubble tea places only available in Cambodia!

After the enlightening sharing session, we moved on to the Connect & Talk session where participants were separated into 2 breakout rooms with a speaker in each one. The audience had the opportunity to ask the speakers any questions they had about Cambodia and its culture during the session, and the speakers spilled some interesting information that most of us wouldn’t have expected. We bet you didn’t know that Angelina Jolie has a home in Cambodia, where she hosts some of her shoots? Neither did we!

After the Connect & Talk session, the hosts conducted another short quiz where the audience was tested on their knowledge of Cambodia, having learned more from the speakers. It was a great surprise to see that most of us had picked up a lot by the end of the night and improved our understanding of the country and its culture. The session ended at 9.30pm with a quick group photo and feedback sharing session.

Speaking of that, if you attended the event and would like to share your feedback, click this link to reach us. We would love to hear from you! Aside from that, a huge thank you to the speakers and Sunway Cultural Exchange team for making it a blast, and of course to our participants who made the time to attend the event! We hope to see you at the next one too.
