Learning Opportunities and Career Pathways in Hospitality

The School of Hospitality welcomes 30 students from Foon Yew High School, Kulai for a Hospitality Workshop by lecturers, Ms Rita Lo and Dr Maggie Leong. The workshop conducted is one of the initiatives by the School of Hospitality to engage with visiting students to explore learning opportunities in the School and future career prospects.

Both Ms Rita and Dr Maggie started off the workshop with a fun quiz. The group of young and bright students were enthusiastic and participated in the quiz with excitement. The lecturers also shared about Sunway City and how it is integrated with different subsidiaries of Sunway, comprising Sunway Education, Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa, Sunway Lagoon, Sunway Pyramid and Sunway Medical.

During the workshop, the lecturers also highlighted on the importance of innovation and how it would be significant for the future of the hospitality industry. There are also typical stereotypes about the hospitality industry, where one only thinks about housekeeping, bell boys, and the welcoming receptionists. The students were also briefed on how the service industry, a largest economy-contributing sector, is linked to the hospitality industry.

A discussion was also carried out amongst the students to enable them to share about their opinions on their ambitions and their understanding on a career in the hospitality industry. It is important to engage topics on career pathways with the youths to help students choose a field that is in tune with their skills and job expectations, so that they will be able to perform at their level best, which ultimately helps them succeed.
