Students from the School of Hospitality Successfully Plan and Execute a Halloween Themed Event

The Diploma in Events Management students (Jan & Aug 2017 intake) recently organised a two-day Halloween-themed event to commemorate the School of Hospitality’s 20th Anniversary. The event was a two-part celebration, with a Haunted Mansion in Art Gallery, Level 1, Sunway University Building, and a Hell’a Food Fest Bazaar in the Boulevard, Sunway College.

The event, which is part of a subject module (Events Operations II) requirement, was a CSR project that managed to raise more than RM3,000 benefiting an animal shelter called Second Chance Animal Society (SCAS) located in Hulu Langat, Selangor. On top of that, students also learned practical skills in organising and managing events. This subject module focuses on managing, staging and evaluating events, obtaining sponsorships, creating promotional materials, as well as handling media relations and marketing strategies.

The Haunted Mansion was the highlight of the event whereby participants were lining up to enter the mansion to get scared out of their wits! There were many ‘ghosts’, scary characters from various horror movies as well as exciting games for all to enjoy. In addition, the Hell’a Food Fest Bazaar saw over 15 vendors and food trucks from popular food retail stores such as Chatto, TeaLive, Susenji, Cowboy and Little Fat Duck - all trading signature items at the Boulevard, Sunway College.

The highlight of the food bazaar was a unique food challenge, called the “Hot & Cold Food Challenge”. In this challenge, the participants had to eat superbly spicy noodles in the shortest time possible, and then consume freezing cold ice cream. The noodles, which were sponsored by Hot Pot Kitchen, were indeed “very, very spicy”, according to one participant.

It was a challenge and a good learning experience for the students. There was an opportunity for the students to manage responsibilities and to learn to deal with external stakeholders, such as the vendors, suppliers and sponsors.
