BSc (Hons) Psychology graduating student wins Best Paper Award in Chennai!

Ms. Shorolipi Emma Chaudhury, a graduating student from the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychology Programme has won the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Emerging Trends in Psychology organised by the University of Madras in Chennai, India, 15-17 March 2018. She presented her paper on her final year project entitled, “Perception of Emotion and Emotional Contagion: The Cross Cultural Comparison of Hindustani Music among Malaysian Students”, under the supervision of Dr Priyadarshini Moharkonda Srinivasan, who also presented at the conference.

This is Shorolipi’s first international conference, and her win is a very momentous achievement given that she beat other presenters who were mainly seasoned academics and researchers at the postgraduate level. This win is a very proud accomplishment also for the Department of Psychology at Sunway University - to have an international level acknowledgement of our undergraduate student. We rejoice with Shorolipi and wish her more successes in her life.

Further to Shorolipi’s win, two of Sunway University’s Department of Psychology academics also presented at the conference. Associate Professor Dr Alvin Ng Lai Oon was an invited plenary speaker on the topic, “Mindfulness as Cognitive Therapy”, and Dr Priyadarshini Moharkonda Srinivasan present a paper based on her undergraduate student, Mona Abdulrahman Omar’s final year project research entitled, “Impact of Financial stress and Interpersonal Stress on Academic Performance”. Dr Priyadarshini was also the Chair of the Cultural and Social Psychology session of the conference.

This conference was held in conjunction with the Platinum Jubilee Celebration of the Department of Psychology at the University of Madras, that was established 75 years ago. The conference, attended by around 500 participants mostly from around India, had 6 plenary speakers, 96 oral papers and 32 posters. It was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Madras.
Sunway University’s participation at this conference is a good international exposure given that there is further interest from Indian academics and researchers to explore research collaborations as well as postgraduate studies in psychology. Coincidentally, the Department of Psychology at Sunway University now has its PhD in Psychology Programme approved and this has garnered interest from students from India interested in pursuing their PhD studies at Sunway University.
