Sunway first year students win platinum and silver awards in design competition

Two teams of first year students from Sunway University’s Diploma in Interior Design programme excelled in the Dark Tower Competition organised by Sony Pictures, winning themselves Platinum and Silver awards.

Tang Win Ni, Tham Yee Ying, Wong Ruo Lin and Jamie Cham Hui Sim of Team MEEE, who won the Platinum Award, took home RM6,000 cash, a trophy and Dark Tower merchandise. The all-girls team, led by Tang, designed and built an inverted tower based on the two worlds depicted in the move, the modern and the one conquered by evil and darkness.

For Tang, her participation in the competition enabled her to explore different materials, colours and expand her creativity. The team used balsa wood, pipe and paper clay to build their tower, poster and acrylic for colouring.

Team YEW, led by Louis Chong took home the Silver award. Louis, together with his team members Lee Kee Chun and Wong Hong Sheng, built their tower based on the concept of a holy fortress.

“As the darkness rises, an evil tree grew and penetrated the fortress and as the evil grew, the fruit blooms on the tree. The fruit is also a sign for countdown. When all the fruits fall to the ground, the pioneer of evil will be unleashed,” Louis said. The team won themselves RM2,400 cash, a trophy and Dark Tower merchandise.

The Diploma in Interior Design programme under the School of Arts at Sunway University is a two-and-a-half-year programme which encourages students to develop handy skills through hands-on interior design activities in class and participation in live projects and competition in the industry such as the Dark Tower Competition.
