Malaysia has made a commitment to reduce the intensity of carbon emissions to 45% by 2030 as compared to 2005 levels. This session will provide an overview on Malaysia’s policies toward the reduction of emissions from power generation and transportation at the federal level followed by a presentation from the Sarawak Economic Planning Unit in supporting the national policies. Tenaga Nasional Berhad will share their commitment in tackling the climate crisis through climate change mitigation and adaptation. We will also get to hear about how the European Union is tackling this issue through the EU Green Deal.
Objective: Considering the role of different stakeholders via a whole of nation approach in transitioning Malaysia's economy to one which is carbon neutral

This session will share the effort that has been made as well as future planning of Malaysian government in relation with the Convention on Biological Diversity which comprises three (3) main objectives: (i) the conservation of biodiversity; (ii) sustainable use of its components; and (iii) fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources. The Director for Natural Capital from the European Commission will also share how the European Union is tackling this issue through the EU Green Deal. The discussion in the session will be linked to the COP15 vision ‘Living in harmony with nature’.

There is vast scope to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by applying circular principles – notably re-use, re-manufacturing and re-cycling - to key sectors such as the built environment. Yet it notes that most federal, state and local governments barely consider circular economy measures in policies aimed at meeting the Paris Agreement target of limiting global warming to as close as possible to 1.5°C. The lessons learnt from European cities can be shared with our Malaysian cities to bring all countries in alignment to meet the shared goal of keeping temperatures from increasing above 1.5°C
Objective: Educating Malaysian cities on how they may achieve a circular economy, thereby allowing societies to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement on Climate Action and the long term goal of Greenhouse gas emissions reduction
