Workshop on the Struggle for Subaltern Rights in the European Empires

You are invited to register to attend, either virtually or in person, an upcoming workshop on The Struggle for Subaltern Rights in the European Empires organised by the Centre for South Asian and Indian Ocean Studies (SAIOS), School of Arts, Sunway University, Malaysia.

The workshop will explore forms of working class or ‘subaltern’ assertion of Africans and Asians prior to the advent of formal trade unionism. Papers will explore petitioning, complaints, and forms of everyday resistance which demonstrate notions of rights, justice, and redress before these became a normative feature in the discourse of civil society.

Speakers will include among others Prof Nira Wickaramasinghe (Leiden University) - author of Slave in a Palanquin: Colonial Servitude and Resistance in Sri Lanka, Profs Goolam Vahed and Kalpana Hiralal (University of KwaZulu Natal), Dr. Arun Kumar (University of Nottingham), Dr. Radica Mahase (College of Science and Applied Arts, Trinidad and Tobago), and Dr. Ashutosh Kumar (Benares University) – author of Coolies of the Empire. Indentured Indians in the Sugar Colonies, 1830–1920.
