Measuring The World – Can We Believe The Statistics?

In this lecture, Professor Denise Lievesley will draw on her experience of working as a statistician in the UN system to discuss the problems of gathering harmonised data from across countries with very different levels of statistical expertise and resources. She will discuss how statistics can help us to monitor the progress towards internationally agreed goals and how statistics can help countries learn from one another. Professor Lievesley has a particular interest in the topic of trust in official data and so she will talk about some ways in which the level of trust might be improved, a very topical issue in the era of ‘fake data’.

Before coming to Oxford, Professor Lievesley was Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Public Policy and Professor of Social Statistics at King’s College London. She founded the Institute for Statistics at UNESCO and was the Director of the UK Data Archive. She served as a United Nations Special Adviser on Statistics, stationed in Addis Ababa. She has also served as President of the Royal Statistical Society, International Statistical Institute and the International Association for Official Statistics. Professor Lievesley was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to social science.
