Taking it to the Ground: All Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia Joint Event with Jeffrey Sachs Center

The All Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia on Sustainable Development or APPGM-SDG is an independent body approved by parliament, whose members are drawn from both sides of the house. Its main objective is for the localisation of SDGs at the parliamentary level and to monitor its implementation. This collaboration between APPGM SDG and JSC began with a joint public event on 31 October 2020 to feature the first-hand experience of the APPGM-SDG team in devising unique solutions to address SDG challenges in local communities of the 10 parliamentary constituencies of Phase 1 of the APPGM-SDG. A recording of the webinar can be found here.

The main objective of the event was to showcase approaches to localising the SDGs, developing strategies via a bottom-up approach. The APPGM-SDG work closely with the Economic Planning Unit, the Malaysian government body tasked with national SDG monitoring and implementation. Closer ties between Sunway University and the APPGM-SDG will serve to ensure two-way sharing of expertise for better SDG-oriented research and policy making.

Subsequently in April 2021, the APPGM invited JSC to participate in a three-day field visit to Simpang Renggam, Johor. This served to showcase first-hand and develop discussion between the two parties on the SDG issue mapping process. The three day schedule consisted of meetings with relevant stakeholders, local organisations and solutions providers to identify issues based on the SDG framework and devise unique solutions.
