What Is Sustainable Travel and Transportation?

Sustainable transport takes into consideration the ways of transportation that are sustainable in terms of their social and environmental impacts. The focus is on low or zero-carbon emissions modes of transport that are also affordable and accessible for all.

Research

A Study on Sunway Sustainable Intelligent Transportation Ecosystem (SITE)

Environmental sustainability is becoming increasingly challenging as global populations continue to move toward urban settings. This project aims to identify key dimensions that encourage and hinder commuter willingness to adopt sustainable transportation and identify possible intervention strategies and policy designs to increase sustainable transport use within Sunway City further. This ongoing project is done in collaboration with Sunway Group and Monash University Malaysia. While the study started in 2018, in 2020, Sunway expressed its intention to provide further funding for a more detailed study on the impacts of its smart city initiative in reducing traffic congestion.”

The result was a study involving academics from the Schools of Engineering, Business, and Information Technology from the Monash and Sunway universities that focused on three of Sunway City KL’s smart transportation initiatives. These include the elevated electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, elevated canopy walkway fitted with solar panels, as well as the smart parking system employing automation and sensor technology.

The study sampled responses from 50 participants, split across 16 online focus groups. The participants were at least high school graduates, with 20% living in Sunway City KL, frequent commuters in the city, and the rest being intercity commuters.

The project aims to improve the liveability of Sunway City KL continuously.

Education

50 Acts of Sustainability Initiative

Sunway Specific Sustainability Acts encourages students to make more sustainable choices while on campus by giving specific instructions or ideas for them to follow.
To create more avenues for participation, Sunway-specific acts were framed. The Student Council brainstormed acts targeted for the Sunway community to spur greater collective action in creating a culture of green living. Some of these acts included using the elevated canopy walk to the neighbouring Sunway Pyramid Mall instead of driving as well as using Sunway Pals cards instead of taking a parking ticket.

External Engagement

Operations

Pedestrian Priority

Pedestrian priority is given to reduce the need for motorised transportation, which has some consequences such as noise, visual and air pollution - priority has been given to pedestrian-oriented developments included in designing educational spaces. These include walkways, link bridges, and wheelchair ramps. Besides the infrastructure within the campus, pedestrian priority can be found throughout Sunway City. Many places are accessible from Sunway University through the canopy walk and walkways on the ground guided by traffic police.

Free Shuttle Services

Sunway's free shuttle bus services have benefited students the most, with 70% of users being students. Other than ensuring trouble-free transport within Bandar Sunway, the shuttle bus service also aims to reduce air pollution as fewer cars will be used at one time, which aids into.
