Prof Alvin Ng made a Fellow of the Malaysian Association for the Study of Obesity (MASO)

Professor Alvin Ng Lai Oon of the Department of Psychology at the School of Medical and Life Sciences recently became a Fellow of the Malaysian Association for the Study of Obesity (MASO). This was announced at the recent MASO Annual General Meeting 2023.

Prof Ng had been a committee member of MASO from 2003 to 2013 and was involved in various initiatives during his tenure. These include being a content writer for the Strategy for the Prevention of Obesity in Malaysia (SPOM) 2005, and a workshop speaker in MASO Camps for Weight Management.

His expertise in the field of clinical psychology provided for cognitive and behavioural approaches in addressing obesity issues. He was frequently invited to give continuous medical education (CME) by pharmaceutical companies to medical doctors on topics of behavioural modification and motivational interviewing for weight management. His expertise was also used in the regional research project on nutrition and cognitive function called the South East Asian Nutrition Survey (SEANUTS) funded by Friesland Campina, which enphasised the need for improved weight management for better cognitive function.
