Biography

Rathabai Kunchiram has been teaching English since 1992 and has vast experience in teaching learners from multicultural backgrounds. She has taught International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in Pre-University programmes and was a pioneer in the Intensive English Programme (IEP) in September 2003. From 2010 to 2016, she was the IEP coordinator. Her roles include mentoring and training new and young English lecturers. She has received the 10 years’ service award in Sunway University and was also awarded the Teaching Quality Recognition in 2015 and 2017. As an experienced educator, she has made active contributions to the university and community. Currently, she is the President of the Sunway Academic Staff Association. In class, she encourages the use of technology and social media for effective teaching and learning. To her, it is vital to practise ‘happiness’ in classroom. She has presented papers and conducted workshops in local and international conferences/symposiums and has also attended numerous staff development trainings.

  • Heritage studies: Hybrid communities focusing on the Melaka Chitty community (Straits born Indians)
  • Classroom action research
