Find out what is expected of you as a learner

It is important that you attend your first lecture/class of the semester. This will provide you with all the information you need such as the online platform your lecturer may use, the subject outline and assessments related to each subject. Your lecturers will inform you on how classes are conducted and this will help you plan your time effectively.

Create a study plan

Create a study plan

We advise that you have a study plan so you can keep track of your classes and assignments. If you are expected to take part in online sessions at a particular time then put those sessions in your study plan – the easiest way to do this is by using your online diary so that you get reminders on your computer and your mobile phone. Ensure that you allocate sufficient time into your study plan every week. If you have assignments to complete put the deadlines in your diary and ALSO put in some time to do the work you need to complete the assessment.

Be independent

Be independent

It is crucial for you to be proactive and independent in looking for information related to your class, or assignments. At the university, you are responsible for your own learning. It is important that you attend all your classes- online or physical. If your lecturer chooses to provide a pre-recorded video and some activities for you to engage with before your face-to-face class, it is important that you engage with these materials before attending the session. This is to ensure effective learning for you and your peers during the face-to-face session.

Start every session with personal goals, learning objectives and questions, so that you can actively look for answers and link the topics to the subject. This will help you understand the subject better.

Choose your dedicated place to study

Choose your dedicated place to study

It is important that you have somewhere comfortable when you are attending your online session or when you are engaging with pre-recorded videos. Sit at a proper table or desk with an appropriate chair, ensure your screen is at a comfortable height. Make sure you have everything you need close by and enough space to type and/or make notes.

Communicate with your lecturer

If you have any problems, questions or need guidance, make sure you ask for help. Be sure of the areas you would like to seek guidance on before meeting up with your lecturer.

Be kind to yourself and help one another

Be kind to yourself and help one another

Adjusting to the new environment and modes of learning will take time, but do be kind to yourself as it is a learning process. Some students may adapt faster than others, so it is also important to lend a helping hand to anyone that finds it hard to adapt. Interact with your friends frequently as working with others will keep you motivated and it’s a great way to share what you have learned.

Be aware of your subject assessment methods

Be aware of your subject assessment methods

Assessment methods have changed, post pandemic. There are some assessments that are conducted online and some face-to-face. It is important for you to be aware of your lecturer’s mode of assessment. If the subject has a mock test, it is important that you sit for it to familiarise yourself with the assessment structure and method.
