About The Programme

This research driven programme aims to further develop your current research skills in one of a number of key areas of biology. Working with your supervisors, you will be exposed to the many aspects of research activities including critical analysis of literature, identifying an area of contribution, gathering information and communicating ideas through journal publications and conference presentations. 

Tutorials will be conducted in an exclusive, one-to-one manner and supervisors will be on hand to support you throughout the duration of the programme. Prior to enrolment, prospective candidates will have to consult Sunway’s qualified and experienced supervisors to ascertain the area of research.

Programme Structure

Candidates are required to take three modules namely Research, Design, Analysis and Communication, Research Ethics and Biological Safety, and Directed Readings and Academic Presentations to enhance their knowledge in research, in addition to the Thesis component.

The PhD is awarded based on the successful completion of a thesis. The thesis should demonstrate proficiency, criticality and mastery in the subject or chosen area of research.


Entry Requirement

i.   A Master’s Degree in biological sciences dicipline, accepted by HEP Senate;
ii.  Other qualifications equivalent to a Master's Degree that are accepted by HEP Senate
iii. Medium of instruction of previous degree in English or Competence in English language and a TOEFL score of 600 or equivalent for candidates from universities in non-English speaking countries outside Malaysia.

i.   There shall be no direct entry from bachelors degree level to doctoral degree level
ii.  Candidates with bachelor degree who are registered for a Master's degree programmes may apply to convert their candidacy to the doctoral degree programmes within ONE (1) year after Master's degree registration, subject to:
     a) CGPA of at least 3.67 or equivalent in bachelor degree;
     b) Having shown competentcy and capability in conducting research at doctoral degree level; Progress Report (approx: 5000 words) accompanied with a transfer form
     c) Rigorous internal evaluation and approval by the Senate.   


English Language Requirements:

  • IELTS 6.0;
  • TOEFL 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 80 (internet-based);
  • PTE Academic 50 overall (minimum 46 in each skill)
  • Cambridge English (First) 75+
  • Cambridge English (Advanced) Minimum 67
