Sunway University is fully recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia. All academic programmes have been approved by the Ministry and have been accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), which adheres to rigorous international standards for academic quality. Where relevant, the academic programmes have also met the requirements of appropriate professional bodies.
The University is ranked within the 701–750 range of universities in the world by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, and is also ranked among the top 150 young universities worldwide.
In the 2022 edition, Sunway University performed among the top 18% in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022. The University also emerged as an Overall 5 Star rated (Excellent) institution for the second time in the QS Stars University Ratings, as well as Five-Star ratings for the individual categories of “Teaching”, “Facilities”, “Employability”, “Social Responsibility”, “Inclusiveness”, "Academic Development", "Internationalisation" and "Actuarial Studies".
Sunway University’s Business and Management Studies has climbed up 50 places (from being ranked between 451 – 500 in 2020) to its current rank, 401 – 450 in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021. Additionally, the University has a five-star "excellent" rating in the national University and University College Excellence Assessment (SETARA-2018/2019), and has also achieved ISO 9001 certification for the University’s quality management system in regards to the provision of higher education and research management.
In recognition of the quality of the University's education in the information technology field and its commitment to the use of advanced digital technology across the institution, the University has been awarded the "Premier Digital Technology University" status by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation. In the 2017 Student Barometer Survey Entry Wave, the University was rated first in Asia for “Laboratories”, “Physical Library”, “Technology” and “Campus Buildings”, and first in Malaysia for “Overall Aspects of Institutional Experience”, which includes various categories such as “Safety”, “Virtual Learning” and “Sports Facilities”.
Sunway University has risen from position #473 in 2020 to #280 in 2021 as the World's Most Sustainable University.
Sunway University has been recognised as the 473rd World's Most Sustainable University in 2020. UI GreenMetric World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings on sustainability. It is an initiative of the University of Indonesia that ranks universities around the world based on their commitment and actions towards sustainability. UI GreenMetric World University Rankings aims to increase university awareness towards sustainability.
Sunway University has sealed partnerships and affiliations with the world’s best institutions such as Harvard University, University of Oxford and University of Cambridge. These connections create strong academic and cultural ties among the institutions that encourage knowledge-sharing from the world’s leading experts.
The University also collaborates with Lancaster University in a strategic partnership that leads graduates of many Sunway University degree programmes to obtain certificates from both universities. Lancaster University is ranked in the Top 10 of three major UK league tables – The Times/Sunday Times, Complete University Guide and The Guardian.
In another rewarding partnership, Sunway University is proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Le Cordon Bleu International. This collaboration awards graduates from certified Sunway University culinary and hospitality programmes with a degree/diploma from the University with a parchment from Le Cordon Bleu. A prestigious culinary arts institution, Le Cordon Bleu was established in 1895 in Paris and is acclaimed for its excellence in gastronomy and hospitality education.
