School of Hospitality Celebrates Highest Participation in the Student Barometer Survey and being in Education for 20 Years

Sunway University’s School of Hospitality (SOH) had double reasons to celebrate on 29th June 2018! The School celebrated its achievement for having the highest student participation in the 2017 Student Barometer Survey and 20th Years of Education.  Around 250 students and alumni celebrated together with staff, an event which involved refreshments, entertainment, games and an alumni meeting session.

The BSc (Hons) Conventions and Events Management students (i.e., the January and March 2017 intakes), painstakingly organising the event, which was also part of the continuous assessment of the module ‘Conventions and Events: Productions and Operations’.

Dean of the School of Hospitality, Professor Marcus Stephenson said: “Although I have only arrived at the School fairly recently, several colleagues who have been part of the hospitality team nearly 20 years have informed me of the many successes the School has achieved over the years. This celebration is a testimony to the good work of the School in serving students and the academic community for the past two decades. Thank you to all involved!”

Chong Teck Jung, the Project Leader was happy with this experiential learning experience, which is central to the School’s teaching and learning philosophy. He believed that the event developed his planning, communication and conflict management skills. He further added his appreciation towards the School’s alumni who supported the event with their presence. Khoo Yi Qing, who was responsible for sponsorship, highlighted how this event immensely improved his verbal, written, and teamwork skills. As for Isabell Voo, the event was successful when she witnessed the excitement projected by the attendees. She further added that experiential learning taught her the importance of networking and emotional intelligence in managing issues. This practical element is very valuable to her as it ‘makes you better yourself’ in the event organisation and strengthens personal development.
