How Quantum Mechanics Might Answer Life’s Biggest Questions

Quantum Mechanics is the most powerful and at the same time strangest theory in all of science. It underpins much of physics and chemistry, and without it we would not have developed modern electronics. Now, an exciting new field of science is emerging, called quantum biology. Biologists have thus far got away without having to worry about this theory of the subatomic world, in which particles behave like waves and atoms can be in two places at once. However, there is now strong evidence that many of the processes inside living cells would not be able to work without a helping hand from the quantum world. The subject is controversial yet hugely exciting.

Professor Jim Al-Khalili is a well-known science communicator, author and broadcaster. He has written eleven popular science books. His book on quantum biology, Life on the Edge, has been shortlisted for the 2015 Royal Society Winton Prize.

In this lecture, Professor Al-Khalili introduces this exciting new field and the researchers who are exploring it and asks whether we might even one day be able to explain the mystery of life itself using quantum mechanics.
