Vice-Chancellor’s Profile

Professor Graeme Wilkinson became Sunway University’s third Vice-Chancellor on 1 July 2012.

Professor Graeme Wilkinson is a physicist and specialist in satellite remote sensing. He graduated in physics from Imperial College, London, with first class honours, and obtained a doctorate in atmospheric physics from Oxford University. His technical specialisation is in environmental analysis using advanced computational techniques with highly complex satellite-derived data.

He was born in the UK and after his university studies, he initially worked in management consulting in London. He then returned to academia where he held research and lecturing posts at several UK universities, including University College London, before joining the European Union’s Joint Research Centre in Italy where he managed environmental research projects involving EU scientists, academic institutions and industry partners focusing on land use and land use changes. After that, he returned to the UK to take up senior management positions in UK universities with a particular emphasis on widening access to university.

He has co-authored and co-edited over 100 academic publications, including several books on information technology and the application of advanced computing techniques in analysing environmental problems, such as Fundamentals of Information Technology (published by Wiley), Neurocomputation in Remote Sensing Data Analysis (published by Springer), and Machine Vision and Advanced Image Processing in Remote Sensing (published by Springer). He has also served on the Editorial Boards of several major international academic journals, including The International Journal of Geographical Information Systems, The Journal of Geographical Systems, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters and SPIE Applied Remote Sensing

His past posts include Head of the School of Computing and Information Systems at Kingston University, London, Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Dean of the Graduate School at Lincoln University, UK, and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Glyndwr University, Wales, UK. Professor Wilkinson is a British Chartered Physicist, a Registered European Physicist, a British Chartered IT Professional, a Fellow of the British Computer Society and a Fellow of the UK Royal Society of Arts.

Professor Wilkinson now undertakes research on higher education policy issues and contributes to Sunway’s Centre for Higher Education Research.
