Professor Matthew Sansom
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education)

Professor Sansom joined Sunway as Head of the Department of Performance and Media in 2017. In 2018 he was appointed as Associate Dean to the School of Arts and then in 2020 as Pro Vice-Chancellor Education. Matthew is from the UK and is a music graduate of the University of Sheffield, during which time he also studied at the University of North Texas, USA. He was awarded the Wightman Research Studentship in the Humanities and Social Studies to pursue his doctorate and completed his PhD in 1997. His academic career in the UK spans 25 years during which time he has pioneered pedagogical practices in the creative arts at a number of leading UK Universities, including the University of Surrey where he led provision in creative music technology for 12 years before joining Sunway.

Professor Sansom is an artist and academic with research interests in the philosophy, aesthetics and pedagogy of creativity and improvisation. In addition to academic publications on these topics, his research includes artworks across a variety of media and contexts including sound, video, sculpture, installation, performance and musical composition. He has received a number of international commissions including for the Four Seasons Hotel Shanghai, and has had works exhibited and performed internationally, including at the National Theatre of Prague, the Victoria & Albert Museum, ICA (London), CCA (Glasgow), the Korean Institute of Culture, Ely Cathedral (UK) and at galleries and venues in Southeast Asia, New Zealand, Europe and the USA. .
