Jason Yim, an alumnus of the BSc (Hons) in Psychology Programme (Batch 16) at Sunway University won the Sunway iLabs’ “Start-It Challenge 2017”, a competition for entrepreneurial start-ups who graduated from universities in Malaysia within the last three years. His company, Unity Therapy beat 159 other contestants for the RM5,000 First Prize, in the two-month long competition that ended on 27 September 2017.
Jason won the pitch competition in the finals based on his inspiration for creating a chatbot (an artificially intelligent chat-robot) that is used for mental health care. According to him, the social stigma surrounding mental health leaves people discouraged from seeking professional help. So Unity Therapy is building a chatbot with artificial intelligence to bridge the gap between people and mental health professionals. “Think of it as a psychologist version of Siri” says Jason, who describes the chatbot as being an electronic friend who is available 24-hours a day and able to deliver basic cognitive behaviour therapy.
This win for Jason has opened many doors to new partnerships and collaborations. Jason has been a keen entrepreneur for mental health care since graduating from Sunway University, kept regular contacts with his lecturers and took the opportunity to engage with Sunway iLabs when it first started. The Department of Psychology as well as the whole Sunway University is proud of his achievements and we wish him the best in his noble endeavour.
