Prof. Dr. Abhimanyu Veerakumarasivam of the Sunway Institute of Healthcare Development, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alvin Ng Lai Oon, Head of Department of Psychology at Sunway University, attended the International Obesity Workshop 2017: Addressing the Global Health Challenge of Obesity in Malaysia and Beyond, that was co-organised by the Academy of Science Malaysia and the UK Academy of Medical Sciences on 2-3 October 2017 at Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. This two-day workshop involved top scientists in Malaysia and UK to determine the direction of actions towards addressing obesity in Malaysia. Prof. Veerakumarasivam also played an active role as the steering committee member that brought together a very broad range of scientists and relevant agencies in the country to deal with a very worrying trend of obesity in Malaysia. The workshop was chaired by Academician Distinguished Professor Datuk Dr Looi Lai Meng from University of Malaya and Professor Andrew Prentice from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK. The participants heard from international and local presenters on their experiences in research as well as interventions to reduce obesity in various settings, and then had outcome-based discussions on measures to take for addressing the regional and global problems of obesity. Prof. Veerakumarasivam contributed actively with his expertise in epigenetics, while Assoc Prof. Ng provided updates on the psychosocial approach to weight management in this multi-disciplinary workshop. The workshop was a success in that its conclusion saw all parties committing to actively working on aligning mutual interests in combating obesity.
