Brief Description of Workshops

TRACK A: Flexible Education Ecosystems towards 21st Century

Lifelong learning has long been promoted as a national agenda to increase the knowledge, skills and competencies of individuals within their personal, civic, social and/or work area. The workshops in this track dives into the relevance of today’s education systems with the 21st Century.  The workshop titles represent the initiatives by the Malaysian higher education sector in developing an ecosystem for continuing learning to meet the needs of the society within a broader context.

APEL (A), (C) and (Q)

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) is a systematic process which involves the identification, documentation and assessment of prior experiential learning to determine the extent in which an individual has achieved the desired learning outcomes in order to gain access to a programme of study and/or award of credits. This workshop provides participants with the opportunity to understand the benefits of APEL for higher education institutions and students. Participants will also gain a better understanding of the requirements, processes and procedures involved in the implementation and management of APEL.

Micro-credential

Micro-credentials have been recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) to provide more flexibility to higher education providers (HEPs). Micro-credentials are various forms of certifications which focus on a smaller volume of learning compared to conventional awards. They also enable the unbundling of accredited programmes by HEPs which makes micro-credentials accessible to non-traditional learners.  The workshop highlights the value of micro-credentials in promoting flexible education and provides effective ways to offer micro-credentials at higher education institutions.

TRACK B: Efficient and Effective Delivery System with Integrity

The education system provides recognition of student achievements through the award of degrees which reflects on their abilities and directly impacts on their future. Therefore, integrity is an essential part of the teaching and learning processes to ensure that students receive the highest standards of education and are being evaluated fairly through valid and reliable assessments. The workshops in this track elaborates on the importance of efficiency and effectiveness in content development, delivery and assessments during this an era of virtual teaching and learning while maintaining the integrity and quality of the delivery and experience.

Synchronous versus Asynchronous Online Distance Learning

Online education has been growing in popularity and accessibility before it became a necessity due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. Online learning can be grouped into two broad categories: synchronous and asynchronous. This workshop will provide insights on the advantages and disadvantages of both formats and equip participants with the knowledge and skills to implement and manage synchronous and asynchronous online delivery effectively while ensuring the quality of the delivery.

Alternative Assessment

Alternative assessment is an increasingly popular discourse in higher education and is especially relevant now when all teaching and learning activities must be shifted online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Knowledge about alternative forms of assessments is crucial as many higher education institutions are lacking in resources to conduct proctored online examinations, thus unable to ensure the validity and reliability of the examination results. The workshop provides insights on the opportunities and obstacles associated with implementing alternative assessment, with special focus on quality assurance.  Participants will be able to discover ways to overcome obstacles in implementing alternative assessments while ensuring the attainment of learning outcomes.

TRACK C: Sustainable Curriculum

As with every industry, the education industry needs to evolve based on the changing needs of the society. Thus, the concept of sustainable curriculum design is explored in this track which provides the opportunity to describe and explain some strategies and frameworks to create a sustainable curriculum that can respond to different challenging and ever-changing circumstances. The workshops also look at the internal and external barriers in designing and implementing sustainable curricula among universities.

Fluid and Dynamic Curriculum

The design of a curriculum needs to be flexible in order to respond to the changing needs of the industries and educational experiences.  A fluid and organic curriculum structure is non-conventional in nature where there is convergence of the discipline with transformative teaching and learning methods, as well as alternative assessments.  This workshop investigates the various components of a fluid and dynamic curriculum and dives into an example of an implemented curriculum framework.

IR 4.0 Education – Convergence Curriculum

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) has heavily impacted on most industries’ processes. To fulfil the needs of the IR 4.0, higher education institutions need to revamp their approach to education by developing curricula that can produce holistic individuals with academic abilities, life skills and the ability to critically and creatively relate and utilize different disciplines, areas, and fields for work. This can be achieved through convergence education where the knowledge and skills in the liberal arts, social studies, science, and technology is developed as a totality to prepare and shape graduates ready for IR 4.0.  The workshop explores the concept of convergence curriculum in helping to produce holistic and balanced graduates who are IR 4.0-ready.

TRACK D:  International Reference

International benchmarking for higher education quality assurance is essential to stay competitive in the 21st Century and to stay up to par with or surpass our international counterparts. This track focuses on high-performing global practices and standards which enables higher education institutions to implement substantial and sustainable changes for higher efficiency and productivity. The workshops also cover how creative international collaborations can promote enhancements in teaching and learning, management, research and other educational activities.

Global Standard for International Collaborations

International partnerships between universities are beneficial overall for the students, staff and the institution. International experiences such as study abroad programmes and staff exchanges can generate research opportunities among institutions and create cultural awareness. As more communication channels become accessible, the rate of international collaborations is increasing rapidly. However, developing successful international partnerships and forging strong and meaningful connections can take ample time and effort. The workshop provides insights on global standards for international collaborations and ideas on how to establish quality and meaningful international partnerships.

Global Quality Assurance (QA) Framework

The workshop provides insights information on key regional quality assurance frameworks that can serve as a guide to national practice and how these quality assurance frameworks address innovation and change. The workshop will also discuss the importance of external and internal quality assurance, the guiding principles and the roles of quality assurance framework in the midst of globalization and regionalization.
